Deb is an artist and maker taking inspiration from the often overlooked details around us and the varied ways in which we communicate.
Textiles are central to her practice, reflecting an interest in the transformation of thread into cloth and cloth into the functional and decorative items we’re wrapped in throughout our lives. Clothing and textiles offer us protection and warmth but we also use them to communicate, signalling our status, beliefs, occupation, interests and our ‘tribe’. They provide shelter, armour, disguise and decoration as well as giving comfort and holding memories.
Her starting points are observation, photography and drawing which support initial investigations and thinking. A range of processes are then chosen to highlight structure, colour and texture. These include dyeing, printing, piecing, weaving, knitting and stitching. Work is sometimes wall hung but often takes the form of garments and accessories which can more easily become part of daily life.
